Gremlins & Gremlins 2 Blu-ray

Warner Home Video

In shops on 8 May

Oh, the ’80s.  How wonderful you were.  The movies were about adventure and creatures and buried treasure and family.  Lately there’s not so much in the vein of “E.T.” or “The Goonies” or “Back to the Future” or the 1984 classic, “Gremlins.”

Written by Christopher Columbus and produced by Steven Spielberg, “Gremlins” and its less successful (yet still enjoyable) sequel are a throwback to a time when monster movies could be funny and scary.  We didn’t need found footage or torture porn or any of that.  We had horror movies like “Poltergeist” and fantasies like “The NeverEnding Story” and things that just could not be categorized in their Muppet-like weirdness.

We love the Gremlins because they’re mischievous: they smoke cigarettes and wear hats and are generally cheeky little bastards.  And we love watching these adventures because they’re  just pure fun.  So we should all be tickled pink that both Gremlins films have arrived on Blu-ray for our viewing pleasure.  Perks include some making-of pieces, commentary and additional scenes.  But if we’re being honest, we don’t need all that.
